What you will need on day one. 

  • Nitram Charcoal sticks. H, HB, B (can be purchased on the first day of class from ZAFA or found online)

  • Gray toned paper, either Canson brand or sketchbook. The paper that I prefer is:

  • Masking tape

  • White chalk pencil. "Conte a Paris" is a good brand conte pencil

  • Kneaded eraser

  • Pre-primed canvas panel or stretched canvas, 11 inches wide by 17 inches tall.

  • Paper towels

  • Paint

    • Ivory black

    • Raw umber

  • Turpenoid

What you will need after the first day.

  • Brushes (filbert type, assorted sizes) Very small up to about thumb width. You do not need larger brushes than that. Think 1 or 2 for very small details. 1 or 2 for medium size planes, and one for filling in large areas like backgrounds.

  • Medium cups (small cups for holding painting medium)

  • Pallet knife

  • Turpenoid

  • Refined linseed oil

  • Pallet, preferably glass or wood (if you wish, you can inquire about purchasing a ZAFA wood palette by texting Zwick at (808) 938-3861 )

  • Paper towels

  • Paint

  • Permalba White

  • Cadmium yellow light

  • Transparent Gold Ocher

  • Cadmium red light

  • Venetian red

  • Cadmium Orange

  • Burnt Sienna

  • Raw Umber

  • Rose Madder or Perm Alizarin Crimson

  • Viridian

  • Cobalt blue

  • French Ultramarine Blue
