Figure painting level 1
Figure painting is both fun and challenging. Working with live models and being able to manipulate light and color to breathe life into a painting is exhilarating.
Figure painting is also very difficult. Artist need to juggle drawing elements such as proportion, gesture, and value while also tackling the challenges painting presents such as temperature, color mixing, flesh tones and the properties of the medium itself.
This workshop is designed to help students better understand and work though each of these challenges by breaking down the different elements of figure painting in a clear and systematic way.
Through live demos, lectures, and one on one instruction, this workshop will help each individual student gain a better understanding of figure painting and improve their work. The instructor will be doing each of the projects alongside the class as well as giving individualized critiques, insuring that each student is met at their own skill level and does not feel left behind or held back by the class.
In this workshop, students will be introduced to concepts while working from photo reference and master copies. We will then apply what we have learned to working from live models.
Some of the topics covered in this workshop:
-Students will learn how to use comparative measuring to map out a proportionally accurate figure. Along with comparative measuring, students will also learn 3 other tools to analyze and capture accurate visual relationships.
-The class will go over useful anatomical landmarks and a step by step method of approach to constructing a figure.
-Students will learn about values and how to create a light effect, sense of form and space.
- We will go over color mixing and how to confidently mix a desired color-value.
-The workshop will cover how to mix a specific person’s set of flesh tones, and an organized system of efficiently utilizing a painter’s pallet.
-We will work, step by step, through the process of making a figure painting from life. Flowing through the phases of the painting from under drawing, to the block in, to the final surface details.
-At the end of the workshop, students will have completed multiple 1 and 2 day projects both from photo reference, master copies, and live models.
It is recommended, but not required, that students come into this class with some experience in figure drawing and painting. I recommend the introduction to classical drawing workshop, introduction to figure drawing, and the introduction to oil painting workshops that ZAFA offers. However, all skill levels are welcome to join this class. The structure of the course allows for a large amount of one-on-one instruction, insuring that students of all backgrounds are given the guidance they need to push their artwork to the next level.
This Workshop is a great opportunity to learn about figure painting and experience the fun of working from live models. I hope you can join us.
